Jahrat Adib Chowdhury elected to IPU executive committee
She was elected by representatives of all 37 member countries of the Asia-Pacific Geopolitical Group.
Barrister Jahrat Adib Chowdhury, MP, has been elected to the executive committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), strengthening the country's representation in the global parliamentary body.
Adib, chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, secured a majority of votes in the election held yesterday (5 October) at the 153rd IPU Assembly in Arusha, Tanzania, a foreign ministry press release said today (6 October).
She was elected from the Asia-Pacific Geopolitical Group. Representatives of the group's 37 member countries participated in the election.
The foreign ministry described the result as another significant achievement for Bangladesh under the present BNP-led government, following the country's election to the presidency of the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
It said the election reflected international confidence in the government's commitment to strengthening parliamentary democracy and was expected to enhance Bangladesh's voice in international parliamentary affairs.
The IPU is the global organisation of national parliaments. It promotes democratic governance, peace, sustainable development, parliamentary diplomacy and cooperation.
A Bangladesh parliamentary delegation led by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad Bir Bikram is attending the assembly.
