Introduce two-term limit for prime ministers: TIB to govt

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has proposed that the interim government introduce a law to ensure that party chiefs are not appointed as head of the government in the country's democratic practice.

The organisation also suggested limiting the tenure of a prime minister to a maximum of two terms. 

TIB executive director Dr Iftekharuzzaman made the proposals during a press conference titled "New Bangladesh: Interim Government's Role in Establishing Democracy, Good Governance, and Preventing Corruption" held at the TIB auditorium in Dhaka today (28 August).

Iftekharuzzaman further recommended that to ensure neutral and conflict-free parliamentary operations, the Speaker should act independently, free from party influence, and manage all activities of the Parliament. 

He stressed that the Deputy Speaker should be elected from the opposition party, and in the absence of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, opposition members should be allowed to assume the Speaker's duties.

Highlighting the need to avoid conflicts of interest in all parliamentary standing committee activities, he stated, "To ensure the accountability of the executive branch, at least 50% of the chairs of significant parliamentary standing committees should be selected from the opposition members of Parliament."

Additionally, TIB called for the introduction of a non-partisan interim government system to oversee national parliament.
