Dhaka-Ctg rail distance may be reduced by 80km under planned cord line project
The finance adviser may also announce plans to establish the Dhaka-Chattogram Railway Corridor and develop Chattogram into a major logistics hub.
The government is expected to place renewed emphasis on expanding the country's railway network in the upcoming budget, with plans to bring all districts under rail connectivity and strengthen links between railways and major seaports.
According to officials, the budget may also include initiatives to procure modern locomotives, passenger carriages and freight wagons to improve rail services.
Special attention is likely to be given to the Dhaka-Chattogram railway route. A proposed cord line on the Dhaka-Cumilla section could shorten the rail journey between the two cities by around 80 kilometres, significantly reducing travel time and improving operational efficiency.
The finance adviser may also announce plans to establish the Dhaka-Chattogram Railway Corridor and develop Chattogram into a major logistics hub.
Officials from the ministry said steps will be taken to enhance the capacity of the railway workshops in Syedpur and Pahartali. There are also plans to expand local assembly operations for railway coaches and locomotives.
As part of broader railway modernisation efforts, the government is considering the construction of dual-gauge double-track lines and the introduction of modern signalling systems across key routes.
Plans are also being developed to introduce electric traction and high-speed rail services as part of the long-term strategy to modernise the country's rail transport network.
