Home Affairs committee pushes stronger action against drugs, gambling
The committee called for stronger and coordinated efforts to further improve the country’s law and order situation and public security.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Home Ministry today (13 August) identified drugs and gambling as two of the country's major problems and stressed the need for effective and coordinated measures to eliminate them.

The issues were discussed at the first meeting of the committee of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad, chaired by Zainul Abedin, at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

Participants at the meeting said all members of parliament remain committed to a "zero tolerance" policy against drugs. It also called for greater public awareness and a coordinated role by all concerned in combating drugs, says a press release.
The Ministry of Home Affairs informed the meeting that several measures have already been taken to curb drug-related activities, including conducting mobile courts and establishing tribunals and courts with relevant jurisdiction.
It was informed at the meeting that complete transparency had been maintained in police recruitment over the past six months without any political influence or partisan approach.
The ministry and its subordinate agencies also presented detailed sector-wise allocations and expenditure plans for the 2026–27 fiscal year.
According to the information presented at the meeting, the total proposed budget for the Ministry of Home Affairs for the 2026–27 fiscal year is Tk 31,099 crore. Of this, Tk 28,639 crore has been allocated for the operating budget and Tk 2,460 crore for the development budget.
Committee members and Home Affairs Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Parliamentary Whip Rakibul Islam, Whip Mia Nuruddin Ahmed Apu, Mir Shah Alam, Md Kamruzzaman, Md Monwar Hossain, Shirin Sultana, Md Nurul Islam and Md Abdul Baten attended the meeting.
The senior secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, inspector general of police, directors general of departments under the ministry, a brigadier general and other senior officials, heads of relevant agencies, and concerned officials of the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat were present.
