Highway Police from Gazipur's Nawjor and Salna today (26 February) arrested two individuals and seized 22 tonnes of polythene on the Dhaka-Tangail and Dhaka-Mymensingh highways.

During two separate drives, two trucks were seized, Superintendent of Highway Police (Gazipur region) AKM Aktaruzzaman Basunia confirmed.

When contacted, Officer-in-charge of Nowjor Highway Police Station MD Rois Uddin said, "A raid was conducted in a truck at City Kata area under Kaliakair Police Station on Dhaka-Tangail highway today. During this time, 12 tonnes of banned polythene along with the truck were seized and the driver and the helper of the vehicle were arrested."

Meanwhile, Officer-in-charge of Salna Highway Police Station Saleh Ahmed said, "Raids were conducted in suspected vehicles at Rakkhit Para area under Rajendrapur upazila on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway around 4:30am."

"Upon receiving signals from the police, the driver and the helper of a truck fled after stopping their vehicle near the police checkpost. Later, police found 10 tonnes of banned polythene inside the truck. The truck and the seized polythene have been handed over to Joydebpur Police Station. We have also filed a case in this regard," OC Saleh added.

Stating that the Highway Police have been working to prevent the transportation of banned goods along with maintaining security on the highways, Aktaruzzaman said, "Today's drives were part of these initiatives. Highway police have filed a case following the Environment Conservation Act 1995 and Penal Code of 1860."
