Continuous heavy rainfall over the last few days has left parts of Faridpur Medical College Hospital submerged in knee-deep water, severely disrupting medical services and causing immense suffering to patients and their attendants.
The waterlogging was caused by poor drainage and inadequate urban planning, which disrupted the area's drainage system.
A visit to the hospital premises revealed that floodwater had entered the area in front of the emergency department of the old building, making it difficult for patients and visitors to access essential medical services.
Several patient attendants said the accumulation of dirty and contaminated water inside a healthcare facility poses serious health risks.
Water started accumulating underneath the old building following morning showers, making movement nearly impossible for everyone, they added.
They furhter said water began accumulating beneath the old building after the morning's rainfall, forcing patients and attendants to wade through dirty water to enter the hospital.
Many patients seeking emergency treatment were also seen walking through the floodwater to reach the emergency department.
Hospital physician Dr Mizanur Rahman said the problem recurs whenever there is heavy rainfall.
"The situation arises because of problems with the external drainage line. There are shortcomings in the municipality's drainage system. We hope the municipality will take urgent steps to resolve the issue," he said.
