Gazette published renaming BSMMU as Bangladesh Medical University

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) has officially been renamed as 'Bangladesh Medical University'.
The announcement was made through a gazette notification issued today (16 April), signed by the university Registrar Professor Dr Nazrul Islam.
The notification cites Ordinance No. 12, 2025, published on 13 April 2025 by the the authorities. This ordinance, enacted under the powers of the President as per Article 93 (1) of the Constitution, amends the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Act of 1998.
The amendment replaces the words "Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib" in the University Act (Act No. 1 of 1998) with "Bangladesh."
Consequently, as per Ordinance No. 12, 2025, the institution's name will henceforth be known as 'Bangladesh Medical University', reads the notification.
On 13 March, the Advisory Council gave policy and final approval to the draft of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025.
The institution, originally established in December 1965 as the Institute of Postgraduate Medical Research (commonly known as PG Hospital), continued to operate under this name following the country's independence in 1971.
In 1998, the then-government upgraded the institution to university status, expanding its capabilities for advanced medical education and research. It was officially renamed Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) through legislation passed in the National Parliament under the leadership of the Awami League government.
Previously, on the night of 5 February 2024, a group of doctors, officers, and employees at the university removed signboards bearing the name "Bangabandhu" from the institution. The removal began with the signage on the C Block building and was subsequently carried out in several other areas.
