Faridpur hospital shut after wrong surgery on patient

The Saudi-Bangla Private Hospital in the Jhiltuli area of Faridpur has been shut down after a doctor mistakenly performed a gallbladder operation on a patient who was scheduled for treatment for piles.
District Civil Surgeon Dr Mahmudul Hasan visited the hospital after the incident came to light and, upon confirming the error, immediately suspended its operations last night (8 September).
According to the patient's relatives and hospital sources, Happy Begum, wife of Aslam Hossain of Sadarpur upazila, had been admitted yesterday afternoon with piles-related complications under the supervision of Dr Fazlul Haque Shovon.
At 7pm, she was taken to the operating theatre, where Dr Nazrul Islam performed a gallbladder surgery instead.
The patient's condition deteriorated following the surgery.
On receiving the news, Civil Surgeon Dr Mahmudul Hasan and MOCS Dr Al-Amin Sarwar visited the hospital that night and confirmed the error.
Leaders of the Faridpur district branch of the Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) and the Private Diagnostic Centre, Hospital and Clinic Owners Association were also present at the time.
Dr Mahmudul Hasan described the incident as negligence, saying, "The doctor did not check the patient's papers properly. Because of this, a patient with piles was operated on for her gallbladder."
He announced the hospital's closure and said investigation committee will be formed today (9 September), and further action will be taken against the hospital and the doctor after its findings.
The civil surgeon arranged for the victim to be admitted to the Faridpur Diabetic Association Medical College Hospital and ensured that other patients were transferred to the General Hospital and Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
Meanwhile, after the incident became public, all doctors and staff of the Saudi-Bangla Private Hospital fled the premises.
