Rahib Reza death: BMDC suspends Dr Swapnil's registration for 5 years over misconduct
During this period, he will not be permitted to practice allopathic medicine within the country or identify himself as a physician

The Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) has suspended the registration of Dr Mamun Al Mahatab Swapnil after finding him guilty in a case related to the treatment of patient Rahib Reza, who died following an endoscopy procedure.
Under Section 23(1) of the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council Act, 2010 and Rule 36(4)(b) of the BMDC Regulations, 2022, Dr Swapnil's name (Registration No A-25041) has been removed from the BMDC register, and his medical registration has been temporarily revoked for five years.
The suspension came into effect today (1 July), according to a statement from the BMDC.
During this period, Dr Swapnil will not be permitted to practice allopathic medicine within the country or identify himself as a physician.
In February 2024, 31-year-old Rahib Reza, a product manager and IT consultant at Startic Engineering, visited LabAid Hospital in Dhanmondi with stomach gas issues, where Dr Swapnil advised him to have an endoscopy.
Reza's family alleged that Reza was administered anaesthesia without seeing the test report at LabAid Hospital. An endoscopy was performed even though he had physical complications.
Due to this, Reza suffered a cardiac arrest, and at one stage, his physical condition became more complicated. Reza died on 19 February while undergoing treatment at the ICU of LabAid Hospital.
Reza's family members demanded punishment against those responsible for the death.
In March 2024, the High Court ordered the formation of a committee headed by an additional secretary of the health ministry to investigate the death of Reza.
The High Court also issued a rule asking why the hospital should not be ordered to pay Tk10 crore in compensation to Reza's family after a primary hearing on a writ petition filed by the deceased's family.
In January this year, the health ministry ordered the BMDC and the Directorate General of Health Services to cancel the registration of Dr Swapnil and to take action against the hospital.
