634 community healthcare providers (CHCPs) have gone on a hunger strike after not receiving salaries for 16 months.
The CHCPs have been staging a continuous sit‑in and hunger strike in front of the Community Clinic Health Support Trust office at the BMRC building in the capital's Mohakhali area since yesterday (4 November), said Dr Abu Muhammad Zakir Hossain, president of the Community Clinic Trust.
"They have not received any salary or bonus for 16 months. This is in no way acceptable," he said.
He emphasised on drawing attention of the trust's managing director and the authorities concerned to quickly resolve the matter.
The protesters said that after joining as CHCPs in March 2023, they received regular salaries and allowances until June 2024. But since July of that year, payments have been stopped.
They alleged that despite repeated assurances, their salaries have been withheld for unknown reasons.
