HC rule seeks Tk 1 cr compensation for Renu’s family

The High Court on Tuesday issued a rule asking the government to explain as to why Tk 1 crore should not be given to the families of Badda lynching victim Taslima Begum Renu as compensation.

The HC bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal issued the rule after hearing a writ petition filed by Renu’s family.

Advocate Ishrat Hossain stood for the petitioner.

The secretaries to the Public Safety Division of the Home Ministry, Education Ministry, Inspector General of Police, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner,  officer-in-charge of Badda Police Station, headmaster and president of the managing board of the school concerned where the incident had taken place were made respondents to the rule, returnable in four weeks.

Nazmun Nahar Nazma, sister of Renu and her nephew Syed Nasir Uddin, filed the petition with the court on August 18.

Renu was beaten to death over a child abduction rumour at North Badda in the city on July 20.

Her family said she had been in the area looking for a suitable school for her children. A video footage of the incident went viral on Facebook, triggering widespread outrage.

Thirteen suspects have so far been arrested in a case filed over the lynching.
