Grameenphone, BSK renew relations in nurturing reading habit

The country's largest telecom operator Grameenphone has renewed its relations with Bishwo Shahitto Kendro (BSK) to continue encouraging the habit of reading books among young children.

Recently, the company signed an agreement with BSK to extend its support to prize-giving ceremonies of the latter's Book Reading Programme in Dhaka, Chattogram, Barishal, Rajshahi and Khulna, according to a press release.

Through this agreement, Grameenphone will also be sponsoring the books to be given to young readers in rewards.

The company will provide 30,000 books, along with stickers, bookmarks and other tokens, to 20,000 winners during the prize-giving ceremony.

Grameenphone has been a partner of BSK since 2004. Every year, approximately 200,000 students participate in the Book Reading Programme, and over 20,000 students receive prizes for demonstrating their reading habits.

At the signing ceremony, Grameenphone's Chief Executive Officer Yasir Azman said book-reading habit can empower children and thus enlighten a generation. Grameenphone is happy to be part of this noble cause and nation-building movement for more than 16 years.

"I hope this book-reading movement [of BSK] will reach the remotest corner of Bangladesh and contribute to reducing inequalities through empowerment," he added.

BSK Chairman Professor Abdullah Abu Sayeed said reading books is one of the best ways to be informed in today's world where information is abundant.

"It develops our thoughts, gives us endless knowledge and enhances our imagination. Hence, we want to spread the habit throughout the country."

In 2014, Grameenphone and BSK also launched a digital library named Alorpathshala (School of Enlightenment). The online platform provides one with scope for reading free and download from more than 500 books. Till date, over 15 lakh books have been downloaded from www.alorpathshala.org.

Grameenphone is a leading telecommunications service provider in Bangladesh with a customer base of more than 7.6 crore. The company also is listed with the Dhaka Stock Exchange.
