Govt verifying if lynching incidents linked to political plot

The government is looking into the lynching incidents to verify whether those are political ploy. The possibility of involvement of any vested quarter in those is also being scrutinised.

“However, we will bring the perpetrators to book whoever they are,” said Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader.  

The minister was briefing the press at his office on Monday.

At least 10 persons were beaten to death while 50 got injured in the past 12 days across the country.

“I have already talked to the home minister. He assured me that strong stand has been taken to prevent any repetition,” Quader, also the general secretary of the Awami League, said in reply to a query.

The lynching incidents are believed to be linked with the rumour that blood and heads are required for the piling work of the Padma Bridge.

Bangladesh police have already arrested a number of people for allegedly spreading propaganda on social media that “children were being abducted for sacrifice by beheading”.   

The prime minister also ordered the law enforcers to arrest those spreading “such unscientific, unrealistic, and ridiculous idea”.
Quader on Monday promised to remain impartial while taking action if any ruling party activist is found involved in propagating or lynching.

“Everyone is equal before law. Sheikh Hasina never introduced anything different for her party men and never will do so,” he said.
