Govt to verify freedom fighters list, preserve Liberation War history
“The history and spirit of the Liberation War have been misused for a long time, depriving the younger generation of knowing the correct history," Liberation War Affairs Minister Major (retd) Hafizuddin Ahmed said.
The government has decided that an initiative will soon be taken to verify the list of 1971 freedom fighters and preserve the accurate history of the Liberation War.
The decision was taken today (22 February) at a meeting between Liberation War Affairs Minister Major (retd) Hafizuddin Ahmed and members of the Jatio Muktijoddha Council (Jamuka) held at the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs in Dhaka.
According to a ministry press release, several important decisions were made at the meeting to verify the list of genuine freedom fighters and preserve accurate history.
At the meeting, Hafizuddin said the Liberation War is the fundamental basis of the country's independence, and other movements and struggles should not be equated with the Liberation War.
Expressing concern over the political misuse of the spirit of the Liberation War, the minister said, "The history and spirit of the Liberation War have been misused for a long time, depriving the younger generation of knowing the correct history.
"Many in the new generation remain unaware of the immense sacrifice and endurance of freedom fighters through which they secured Bangladesh's independence."
He further said that the Liberation War is the core foundation of the birth of the state, and this must be remembered.
