Govt to provide free flats for July Uprising injured
Another project for providing free flats to families of July martyrs is also being prepared

The government has decided to construct 1,560 residential flats in the capital's Mirpur Section 9 for those injured or rendered incapacitated during last year's student-led July uprising.
The Ministry of Housing and Public Works submitted the project proposal to the Planning Commission for approval, Commission sources told TBS.
According to the proposal, the project will cost Tk1,344.41 crore, fully funded by the government. Construction is expected to start in July 2025 and be completed by June 2029.
The flats will be built on land owned by the National Housing Authority within the Mirpur Housing Estate area. 15 multi-storey buildings are planned, each with a basement and 14 floors.
Basements and ground floors will have parking facilities, while each of the upper floors will contain 8 flats.
Each flat will be 1,320 sq ft, featuring three bathrooms, ample light and ventilation, and CCTV for security.
The project will include: RCC boundary walls, car parking, lifts, sub-station and generator, solar system, fire hydrants, intercom system, lightning protection, playgrounds, and parks for families and children.
Officials said the Planning Commission's Project Evaluation Committee (PEC) recommended changes to the flat designs, including three bathrooms per flat, scrapping tree planting and eviction costs, and fixing 12 procurement and 12 work packages.
Free flats to families of July martyrs
Earlier, on 27 July, the project for providing free flats to families of July martyrs was presented at the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) but was returned for further review. The earlier proposal had included six 14-storey buildings and ten 10-storey buildings, costing Tk761 crore in the capital's Mirpur 14.
According to Planning Adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud, multiple July uprising-focused projects are being proposed by various ministries. The government plans to coordinate all proposals first, prioritise through feasibility studies, and approve projects in phases. Costs of the proposed projects, including this housing initiative, will be carefully scrutinised before final approval.
