Govt now trying to import ‘banned’ insecticides: Fakhrul

After procuring ineffective insecticide, BNP on Sunday alleged that the government is now trying to import ‘banned’ mosquito-killing medicines to indulge in corruption further.

“Mosquito-killing medicine is not working as they (govt) imported it through corruption. They’ll now procure new insecticides and indulge in corruption further,” said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.   

Speaking at a discussion, he further said, “Newspapers have reported that they’re now going to import two types of (mosquito-killing) medicine that were completely banned in Thailand. They also don’t know about the effectiveness of those medicines.”

Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), a pro-BNP physicians’ body, arranged the programme marking its 30th founding anniversary.

Fakhrul came down hard on Health Minister Zahid Maleque for what he said his ‘irresponsible’ attitude and remarks. “He (Malik) said he has no idea about how many people have so far died of dengue.”

He also described Maleque as ‘cruel’ and ‘inhuman’ for his comment comparing the breeding capacity of Aedes mosquito with the rise in Rohingya refugee population. “How a big cruel minister like him can utter such a word,”

The BNP leader also said when the country was grappling with dengue Maleque went abroad on a personal tour, though the real reason behind it is still unknown.

He also compared the rule of the current government with that of the oppressive fictional monarch in Satyajit Ray’s satirical film 'Hirak Rajar Deshe' who ran his empire by the dictates of his whims. “Even, this regime is worse than that of 'Hirak Rajar Deshe’.

Fakhrul urged DAB leaders and activists to stand by people and help them overcome the dengue crisis.

He advised BNP leaders and activists not to get frustrated over the current situation of the country. “We must overcome the adversities. We’re trying to unite people who can only help change the situation. We’ll surely be able to defeat this regime if we can create a wave of people.”

The BNP leader urged his party colleagues to go to people and encourage them to take to the streets.

Fakhrul said the country is passing through a very tough time as a ‘dangerous monstrous’ government ‘usurped’ power by destroying all the democratic institutions. “This evil force is controlling the judiciary. Now there’s no politics in the country as Awami League has implemented the depoliticisation mission of the 1/11 regime (of 2007).”

He urged the government to take steps for holding a fresh election under a neutral administration dissolving the current parliament before it is too late. “Otherwise, people know how to defeat such a regime.”
