Govt must take action against syndicates and extortions, no room for excuses: Hasnat Abdullah

The interim government must take decisive action against syndicates, extortionists, and tender manipulators, Hasnat Abdullah, convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, said today (8 January).
"You [govt] have no scope for excuses. You have to take appropriate action," he said while speaking to journalists at the Townhall Ground in Cumilla after concluding a programme in support of the July uprising proclamation.
Reiterating the demand for July uprising proclamation by 15 January, Hasnat said, "We initially planned to issue the proclamation ourselves due to the government's inaction, but since they have now taken responsibility to announce it with consensus from all political parties, we decided to postpone our announcement on 31 December.

"But even after several days after 31 December, the government has taken no visible steps. Therefore, we must clearly state that those who have participated in the mass uprising, alongside people from all walks of life, want the July proclamation to be announced by 15 January," he added.
Hasnat Abdullah further said the proclamation must acknowledge the martyrs and the injured.
"It should clearly state the continuity of events from the 1947 Pakistan movement, through the 1971 Liberation War, and the 2024 July uprising. It should also describe the situation under which we were freed from Awami fascism," he said.
He went on to say that the proclamation must reflect the people's aspirations against fascist politics and acknowledge the role of participating political parties.
