No decision to cancel school managing committee head qualifications: Edu minister
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists during an iftar gathering at his residence in the capital today
Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon has clarified that no decision has been made to relax the educational qualifications for heads of private school managing committees.
"I have not announced any cancellation. Only a temporary suspension was applied. People have misquoted me in many ways. There has been discussion about the qualifications for committee heads, but no decision to remove them has been taken," he said.
Speaking at an iftar programme at his Dhaka residence yesterday (14 March), the minister noted that earlier, private school committee heads did not require specific educational qualifications.
The rules were revised in May 2024, requiring governing body presidents of lower, secondary, and higher secondary institutions to hold at least a higher secondary degree (HSC) or equivalent.
In August 2025, the requirements were raised further: governing body presidents must hold a master's degree or a four-year bachelor's degree, while managing committee presidents must hold a bachelor's degree or equivalent.
Milon also highlighted the government's zero-tolerance policy against examination malpractice.
He said steps are being taken to ensure transparency and accountability, including the gradual installation of CCTV cameras across exam centres. "This will significantly reduce opportunities for cheating and irregularities," he added.
The minister called on education administrators, teachers, and stakeholders to maintain discipline during exams and warned that strict action would be taken against anyone involved in malpractice.
He further said the government is considering ways to enhance transparency in education through modern technology, with CCTV installation forming part of this plan.
The iftar programme also included discussions with journalists on ongoing issues in the education sector.
On Friday, the minister reiterated his position at a National Education Week programme in Kachua Upazila Parishad.
The government continues to prioritise only educated and socially responsible individuals who have contributed significantly to education for school managing committee roles, Milon said.
During the event, he also distributed prizes to competition winners and wheelchairs to persons with disabilities.
Milon discussed preparations for the upcoming SSC and equivalent examinations, scheduled to start on 21 April under the existing system, while noting that plans are underway to introduce more practical and modernised rules.
He further expressed his commitment to developing Kachua as a model educational area that could serve as an example for the rest of the country.
