Govt committed to communal harmony: Home adviser
He praised the five precepts of Buddhism as universal human values that, if embraced, could help combat injustice, corruption, and lawlessness in society

Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd) has said that the government remains deeply committed to preserving communal harmony and ensuring peaceful religious coexistence across the country.
"The interim government has taken all necessary steps to ensure that religious communities can observe their traditions with dignity and peace," the adviser said while speaking at the Kathin Chibar Dan ceremony organised by the Bodhigyan Kendra (Buddhist Monastery) in Ashulia today (10 October).
Referring to the month-long Buddhist festival from Ashwini Purnima to Kartiki Purnima, he said that arrangements have been made in all monasteries across the country to facilitate the peaceful observance of the event.
The adviser further said there is no religious division in Bangladesh and people of all faiths are practising their religions freely and peacefully.
However, a section of "fascist-minded intellectuals" often attempts to distort this harmony for their own agenda, he added.
Highlighting the teachings of Buddhism, he said the religion's foundation is built on non-violence, equality, friendship, and compassion. "The values taught by the Buddha — forgiveness, restraint from greed, and respect for one another — are timeless and relevant across all communities," he added.
The adviser emphasised the importance of reviving the legacy of Atish Dipankar, an iconic figure in Buddhist philosophy and scholarship. "As a son of Bangladesh, Atish Dipankar is a symbol of pride. His contributions deserve greater recognition, and establishing an international university in his name in Bangladesh is a timely demand."
He praised the five precepts of Buddhism as universal human values that, if embraced, could help combat injustice, corruption, and lawlessness in society.
Among others, Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dharmapala Weerakkody, businessman Dayal Kumar Barua, Supreme Court Advocate Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua, Subhasish Chakma, and Colonel Didarul Alam were present as special guests.
