Govt committed to advancing blue economy: PM
The prime minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting marine resources, strengthening maritime security and expanding the blue economy.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman yesterday called for coordinated efforts by all stakeholders to harness Bangladesh's maritime potential while safeguarding national interests, saying the government is committed to advancing the country's blue economy.
In a message marking World Hydrography Day 2026, he said the sustainable use of marine resources could help build a prosperous, self-reliant and resilient Bangladesh.
"The ocean is no longer just a geographical boundary; it is a key pillar of economic growth, trade connectivity, energy security, environmental sustainability and strategic strength," he said.
Welcoming this year's World Hydrography Day theme – "Transforming How Ocean Data is Shared" – selected by the International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO), the prime minister said the secure and efficient exchange of ocean data is vital for protecting national interests, strengthening maritime security and supporting economic development.
He noted that timely and accurate ocean information enhances navigational safety, prevents accidents, protects the environment and improves the sustainable management of marine resources.
Describing Bangladesh's vast maritime zone as a cornerstone of economic strength, sovereignty and future prosperity, Tarique said it holds immense natural resources, biodiversity and commercial opportunities.
He highlighted the Bangladesh Navy's hydrographic activities, saying they are essential for ensuring safe navigation, producing accurate seabed charts and supporting planned coastal development. These efforts, he added, help reduce navigational risks, improve port management and accelerate maritime economic growth.
The prime minister reaffirmed the government's commitment to protecting marine resources, strengthening maritime security and expanding the blue economy. He said measures are underway to modernise hydrographic operations, adopt advanced technologies, digitise information systems and deepen international cooperation.
PM urges primary students to excel in studies along with sports
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has urged students to focus not only on sports but also on academic and creative activities.
"Besides sports, you must also excel in your studies and cultural activities. However, it is important that you participate in different kinds of sports," he said during the prize-giving ceremony of the Primary School Gold Cup Football Tournament, followed by the final matches of boys and girls at the Bangladesh Army Stadium yesterday.
The premier said his government plans to organise this tournament at the secondary school level from next year.
"We plan to introduce the Prime Minister's Cup from next year," he said.
