The arrestee was identified as GM Sahabuddin Azam, son of Moinuddin of Sadar upazila in Gopalganj.
"The AL leader, along with his wife, was intercepted at the Benapole Immigration Police check-post as he was preparing to leave the country," Ilias Hossain Munshi, officer-in-charge (OC) of Benapole Immigration Police, told The Business Standard.
He said police arrested him around 11am after discovering his name on a government-issued stop list. "His wife was not detained as there were no charges against her."
Later, he was handed over to Benapole Port Police Station, the OC added.
Benapole Port Police Station's OC Md Russel Mia said, "The arrested AL leader has been handed over to us by the Immigration Police. Since there are ongoing cases against him in Gopalganj, he will be transferred to Gopalganj Police for further legal action."
Azam was wanted in separate cases filed with Gopalganj and Jatrabari police stations.
According to immigration sources, Azam had submitted his passport at the immigration desk for departure clearance when officials found that he was flagged in their system. Upon further inquiry, it was confirmed that he had multiple cases filed against him, including charges related to attacks on military personnel, vandalism, and arson.
