Shanir Akhra protest halts traffic as residents demand uninterrupted gas supply
During the blockade an ambulance remained stuck in traffic with a newborn baby on CCU support for a few hours, said witnesses.
Frustrated by prolonged gas shortages and what they describe as Titas Gas's failure to offer any meaningful assurance, residents of Shanir Akhra and adjacent areas staged demonstrations today (8 December) , disrupting traffic along key sections of a major national highway.
Protesters from the Shekdi area blocked portions of the Dhaka–Chittagong Highway, including Shanir Akhra, Kajla, and Jatrabari, bringing vehicular movement to a halt for several hours.
The protest ended peacefully in the afternoon after the District Commissioner intervened, but demonstrators warned they would resume their protest on Wednesday if their demands were not met within 24 hours.
"The protest has been called off for now out of respect for the assurance given by the District Commissioner," said organiser Ali Fuaad.
Residents said they have been suffering from an acute gas crisis for weeks, making cooking nearly impossible and forcing families to rely on costly alternatives. Several residents said that despite repeated verbal and written complaints to Titas Gas's zonal offices and senior officials at the company's headquarters, no effective action has been taken, and the situation continues to deteriorate.
