Fugitives linked to mass uprising killings will be brought back to country: Attorney General

Maximum efforts will be made through the court to bring back fugitives involved in the killings that occurred during the mass uprising, Attorney General Advocate Md Asaduzzaman said today.

Those responsible for the killings will be prosecuted under the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act of 1973, he said while speaking as the chief guest at the Shadow Parliament event organised at the FDC in the capital.

He added that the tribunal would be reconstituted within the next week, and the legal aspects of televising the trial proceedings are being reviewed to ensure transparency.

The attorney general said trials for crimes against humanity will soon begin for those involved in the July killings, emphasising that everyone who attempted to turn Bangladesh into a failed state will be brought to justice.

Md Asaduzzaman also said Sheikh Hasina has told so many lies that she has attempted to establish falsehoods as truth.

He alleged that the country has been virtually ruled by one person for the past 15 years, with the parliament governed by authoritarianism.

He further said former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque committed a crime by altering the judgement regarding the provisions of the caretaker government, allowing the Awami League to exploit this change. He added that a case has been filed against Khairul Haque, which is currently under investigation.

Debate for Democracy chairman Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiran said at the event that the unprecedented killing of unarmed students during the peaceful movement of July-August will remain a significant black mark in Bangladesh's history.

"Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, along with the Awami League and their allied political parties, is primarily responsible for these murders," he said.
