The wildlife division of the Forest Department today (2 October) rescued a monkey chained at a workshop in Muradpur area of Chattogram city.

Confirming the rescue, Chattogram District Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Officer Dipannita Bhattacharjee told The Business Standard that a worker of the workshop had been keeping the monkey illegally.

"Acting on a tip off, a team of wildlife division conducted a drive around 7pm and rescued the monkey," she said.

Sadar Range Officer Ismail Hossain said, "A worker of the workshop named Nurul Islam Jony bought the approximately one-year-old monkey for Tk2,000 from Nupur Market two months ago.

"When he bought the monkey it was injured and ill. He arranged treatment for the monkey."

"Jony admitted that he did not know it is illegal to buy and rear wild animals according to the Wildlife Conservation Act," Ismail added.

"The monkey has injuries at its hand and is a little weak. It will be provided with necessary treatment and will be released in a suitable place after consulting with higher officials," Ismail also said.
