Foreign ministry summons Myanmar ambassador over cross-border firing
A 12-year-old Bangladeshi girl was severely injured during the cross-border firing.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Myanmar Ambassador U Kyaw Soe Moe today (13 January) at noon and expressed Bangladesh's deep concern over a recent incident of gunfire from Myanmar towards Bangladesh near Whykong Union of Teknaf, Cox's Bazar.
A 12-year-old Bangladeshi girl was severely injured during the cross-border firing.
Bangladesh emphasised that the unprovoked firing is a clear violation of international law and threatens the spirit of good neighbourly relations.
The ministry called on Myanmar to take full responsibility and implement measures to prevent such cross-border incidents in the future.
Bangladesh also urged that any conflict between Myanmar authorities and armed groups within Myanmar should not affect the lives and livelihoods of people in Bangladesh.
In response, the Myanmar ambassador assured that his government would take steps to prevent such incidents and conveyed sincere sympathy to the injured girl and her family.
