Fishers enter Sundarbans to catch crabs after 2-month ban
According to the Forest Department, 705 fishers entered the Sundarbans under the Satkhira Range with permits issued to 235 boats as of 11am
Fishers from coastal areas have started entering the Sundarbans to catch crabs following the end of a two-month ban, bringing relief to many in the community.
Crab collection from the rivers and canals of the Sundarbans resumed today (1 March) after the restriction was lifted.
According to the Forest Department, 705 fishers entered the Sundarbans under the Satkhira Range with permits issued to 235 boats as of 11am.
Assistant Conservator of Forests of the Satkhira Range, Moshiur Rahman, said, "Crab collection from the rivers and canals of the Sundarbans was banned for two months – January and February – during the breeding season. It has been reopened today. Fishers have already started entering the Sundarbans."
"Crabs lay eggs during January and February. The eggs hatch and the young are born during this period. To ensure uninterrupted breeding, crab catching was prohibited during the breeding season," he added.
During the two-month ban, however, 25 cases were filed under the Satkhira Range against those involved in illegal crab collection and other related offences, he said.
