231 accused, including ex-ministers, in first chargesheet over Ctg July killings
The chargesheet was filed under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder in the case of Shahidul Islam Shahid, a 37-year-old footwear shop employee who was shot dead during a clash between protesters and Awami League activists in Bahaddarhat.
Police have filed the first chargesheet in the July uprising killing case in Chattogram, naming 231 accused, including former ministers. The charges relate to the shooting death of a shop employee during clashes between protesters and Awami activists last year.
The murder case stems from the death of Shahidul Islam Shahid, a 37-year-old footwear shop employee, on 3 August 2024, two days before the Awami League government stepped down.
Filed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, the chargesheet names 231 accused, including high-profile politicians and former ministers. A total of 128 individuals have been listed as witnesses.
Former ministers Hasan Mahmud, Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Javed, and Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel are among the key accused, alongside ex-mayors and several former MPs.
Other prominent names include AJM Nasir Uddin, Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury, M A Latif, and several former councillors and Awami League leaders.
Activists from affiliated organisations like Jubo League and Chhatra League have also been charged, according to police.
Chandgaon Police Sub-Inspector Nurul Haque submitted the chargesheet to the prosecution wing on Wednesday. The matter became public yesterday night (1 August).
Chandgaon Police OC Aftab Ahmed confirmed the submission. Court sources said the chargesheet reached the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on 31 July.
The court has scheduled a hearing for 25 August in the presence of the complainant, Shahid's brother Shafiqul Islam, who filed the case on 15 August.
According to case details, Shahid was leaving work when he was fatally shot during unrest in the Bahaddarhat area.
Protesters had earlier attacked the residences of Education Minister Mohibul Chowdhury in Sholashahar and Mayor Rezaul Karim in Bahaddarhat.
Demonstrators claim Shahid was shot by police, Chhatra League, and Jubo League members. Police denied using live ammunition, saying only tear gas and rubber bullets were deployed.
This is the first chargesheet filed in any of the killings linked to the Chattogram uprising, marking a key development in the ongoing investigation.
