While driving with passengers early in the morning, unidentified assailants fired at him from behind, locals said
The father of a local Islami Chhatra Shibir leader was shot dead this morning (10 December) in Chattogram's Lohagara upazila.
Nurul Islam, 55, a CNG auto-rickshaw driver and father of Barahatia Union Shibir president Shafiqul Islam, came under attack around dawn in the Joat Pukuria Lali'r Baperpara area of Ward-3.
According to locals, he had gone out at night as usual with his auto-rickshaw. While driving with passengers early in the morning, unidentified assailants fired at him from behind.
Residents rescued him and took him to a private hospital in Lohagara town, before shifting him to the upazila health complex, where doctors pronounced him dead.
Shafiqul Islam said that at first, he was told that his father had been in an accident, but later learned that he had been shot in the back.
He demanded a quick arrest of the attackers.
Lohagara Police Station OC Abdul Jalil said that they have inspected the scene and have begun an investigation.
"The body will be sent for autopsy, and efforts are underway to identify and detain those involved," he said.
