Farmer's Card pilot to cover 11 upazilas across 10 districts: PM

The government's pilot programme for the Farmer's Card scheme will cover 11 blocks in 11 upazilas of 10 districts spanning all eight divisions, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said.
Speaking in response to a question from Sylhet-2 MP Mst Tahsina Rushdir in parliament today (1 April), Tarique informed the House that the programme will be formally introduced on 14 April, Pohela Boishakh.
He added that under the pilot initiative, around 22,000 farmers of different categories will be brought under the programme, which is being implemented through the Department of Agricultural Extension.
The prime minister said the Farmer's Card aims to ensure overall protection and support for farmers.
As part of the initial phase, pilot activities have already begun across the selected blocks and regions under the supervision of the Department of Agricultural Extension, he added.
Responding to a question on nationwide rollout, he said there are an estimated 27.5 million farmers in the country, adding that the government aims to gradually bring all of them under the scheme over the next few years.
He also noted that, in a separate initiative, Family Cards have been distributed to 37,814 female heads of marginal and low-income households across 13 districts in the initial phase.
