Ex-state minister Dipankar placed on five-day remand over Monir murder during July Uprising
According to the case statement, jute trader Md Monir was shot dead while joining a protest during the July Uprising in 2024 in the Chankharpul area under Shahbagh Police Station on 5 August
A Dhaka court has granted a five-day remand for former state minister for Chattogram Hill Tracts (CHT) Affairs Dipankar Talukdar in connection with the murder of jute trader Md Monir during the July Uprising in Shahbagh.
Following a hearing today (5 January), Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Mia passed the order.
Earlier, police produced Dipankar in court and sought a 10-day remand.
The application was filed by the case's investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Mainul Islam Khan Pulok of Shahbagh Police Station.
Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki argued in favour of the remand on behalf of the state. After hearing both sides, the court allowed a five-day remand.
According to the case statement, during the July Uprising in 2024, small-scale jute trader Md Monir joined a protest with students and members of the public in the Chankharpul area under Shahbagh Police Station on 5 August. He was shot and died on the spot.
Following the incident, Monir's wife, Rozina Akhter, filed a murder case at Shahbagh Police Station on 14 March last year. The case names 351 people as accused and lists another 500 as unidentified suspects.
Notably, Dipankar was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) in the capital's Sobhanbagh area on 10 February last year and has remained in jail since then.
