A former union parishad member was reportedly beaten to death by unidentified people in front of his wife over a land-related dispute in Dhamrai upazila of Dhaka district today (21 February).

The deceased has been identified as Babul Hossain, 50, a former member of Ward-6 of the Kulla Union Parishad, according to police and family members.

He was also involved in local BNP politics, said his wife Yasmin Begum.

She identified the attackers as local residents Afsan, Monir, Arshad, Arshad's son and two others.

"Six local people attacked Babul with various weapons including axes, hammers, and iron pipes and beat him severely. At one point during the beating, the attackers gouged out his eyes and broke his hands and legs," she said.

She further said the attackers had an ongoing dispute with the people of the Arshinagar Housing Project for a long time. At one point, Babul also got involved in that conflict.

The incident took place inside the Aksir Nagar Housing Project in Kulla union of the upazila at around 1:30pm.

Speaking to The Business Standard, Dhamrai Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Monirul Islam said, "Initially, we have come to know that the murder took place over a land dispute. Upon receiving the information, the body was recovered and sent to the hospital for autopsy."

Further legal action will be taken after an investigation, he added.

According to the family members, Babul and his wife were harvesting mustard on a field inside the Aksir Nagar Housing Project at noon.

Suddenly, some people appeared there with various sharp weapons and started beating Babul in front of his wife.

Later, Babul was rescued in a seriously injured condition and taken to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar for treatment, where the doctor on duty there declared him dead.

When contacted, Shafiq, the on-duty manager at the hospital, told TBS that Babul was brought there around 3:30pm.

"We received him dead, with injury marks on various parts of his body," he said.
