Public participation vital to protect wetlands and waterbodies: Rizwana
“Without public awareness and participation, these resources cannot be preserved,” said Rizwana

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan said yesterday that protecting natural wetlands and biodiversity is now a pressing need.
"Without public awareness and participation, these resources cannot be preserved," she said, announcing that public hearings will be organised and conservation initiatives undertaken based on people's opinions.
She made the remarks while exchanging views with residents at Nolgaon in Gazipur's Kapasia Upazila.
"Katuria wetland is not only a treasure trove of natural beauty but also vital for the livelihoods, food security, and ecological balance of local communities," Rizwana said, adding that sustaining this biodiversity requires coordinated efforts by the government, local administration and the people.
She categorically stated that no part of the wetland can be filled in. "If agricultural land is filled, people's food security will be at risk," she warned, also stressing the need to protect the wetland from industrial pollution.
Officials from the Gazipur district and upazila administrations, local representatives and members of environmental organisations were present at the event.
