Heavy rains raise flood risk in parts of Bangladesh: FFWC

The risk of flood has increased in various regions of the country due to rising water levels in several rivers following heavy rainfall.

According to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), the Surma, Kushiyara, Manu, Dhalai, Jadukata, and Someshwari rivers are swelling due to moderate to heavy rainfall in the Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions.

Low-lying areas in Sunamganj, Netrokona, and Moulvibazar districts are facing risk of being affected by flash floods.

In the Brahmaputra-Jamuna river basin, water levels are rising at multiple points, with possibility of further rise in next 5 days.

However, water levels remain below the danger mark in all these areas.

In the Surma-Kushiyara river basin, water levels of rivers are continuing to rise due to ongoing rainfall and may keep increasing for the next two days.

However, a decline is expected afterward, and water is likely to remain below danger levels.

In the Rangpur division, water levels of the Teesta, Dharla, and Dudhkumar rivers are also increasing due to rainfall over the past three days.

While the rivers are swelling, water levels remain below danger marks.

Over the next 24 hours, water levels in rivers of the Chattogram division—including Halda, Muhuri, Feni, Sangu, and Matamuhuri—are expected to remain stable, but a fall is likely within the following two days.

Meanwhile, the water levels of the Ganges-Padma rivers are showing a declining trend.

However, the situation could reverse as rainfall is forecast to increase over the next five days.

Despite this, water levels are not expected to cross danger marks.
