A number of eminent personalities of the country have supported Superintendent of Kushtia Police (SP) SM Tanvir Arafat's speech over the vandalism of Bir Bagha Jatin's sculpture.

The video of his speech has become viral on Youtube.

A total of 11 dignitaries including Shahriar Kabir, president of Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee; Historian Professor Muntasir Mamun; Liberation War Museum Trustee Dr Sarwar Ali; cultural personality Ramendu Majumdar; actor-director Mamunur Rashid; Professor Abdus Selim; Freedom Fighter Nasiruddin Yusuf; Golam Quddus, president of the Sammilita Sanskritik Jot and General Secretary Hasan Arif, artiste Ahkam Ullah and Mofidul Hoque, issued a statement today.

In the statement, they said, "The police superintendent talked in favour of Bangladesh and the Liberation War. The speech followed the ideology of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the fundamental demands of the country that was achieved through a bloody war."

"Similarly, Hefazat-e-Islam's statement against the SP's speech has clarified their (Hefazat) stance against the spirit of 1971. Like us, many others have got the chance to hear the speech," they mentioned.

The statement also reads, "Everyone knows that Bangladesh police formed the first resistance against the Pakistani military on the night of 25 March, 1971. We saw the same spirit in the speech of the Kushtia SP. He cleared about his strong position for Bangladesh and the Liberation War."

The eminent citizens further said in the statement, "We know very well the people, who are against the statement of the police superintendent. They are the defeated evil forces of 1971. They sometimes come as Shibir and sometimes Hefajat. They still do not believe in the independence of Bangladesh. They want to swallow all the achievements of the Bengalis attained through the war of liberation. Consequently, they have dared to break the sculpture of Father of The Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman."

"That is why we think that the SP has given a final warning to those extremists. But we see that the extremists are misinterpreting the statement of the police officer and even threatening.  In this situation, the people who believe in the spirit of the Liberation War strongly demand the arrest of the perpetrators," they concluded.
