By-elections to Bogura-6, Sherpur-3 soon after Eid: EC
“We don’t want to hold any election during the month of Ramadan."
The Election Commission (EC) will hold by-elections to two parliamentary seats, Bogura-6 and Sherpur-3, soon after Eid-ul-Fitr, Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Mashud said today (18 February).
"We don't want to hold any election during the month of Ramadan. We will arrange the by-elections to the vacant parliamentary seats soon after Eid-ul-Fitr," he said.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman contested the 13th national election from two parliamentary constituencies, Bogura-6 and Dhaka-17, and was elected from both seats. However, he vacated the Bogura-6 seat for a by-election and took oath as a member of parliament from the Dhaka-17 constituency.
On 4 February, the EC cancelled the election to the Sherpur-3 constituency following the death of Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Nuruzzaman Badal.
Elections were held in 299 out of the country's 300 constituencies, except Sherpur-3, on 12 February.
