10 killed, 26 injured in road accidents across 8 districts on Eid day
The incidents occurred between morning and late afternoon, with two deaths reported in Mymensingh; two in Chattogram's Patiya and Mirsharai; and one each in Narail, Chuadanga, Faridpur, Madaripur, Gopalganj and Jhenaidah.
At least 10 people were killed and 26 others injured in separate road accidents across eight districts in Bangladesh today (21 March), according to media reports.
The incidents occurred between morning and late afternoon, with two deaths reported in Mymensingh; two in Chattogram's Patiya and Mirsharai; and one each in Narail, Chuadanga, Faridpur, Madaripur, Gopalganj and Jhenaidah.
In Tarakanda, Mymensingh, a collision between a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw and a motorcycle near Shimulia Bhandari's corner on the Shyamnagar–Mymensingh road left two people dead and three injured.
Shyamnagar Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Aminul Islam confirmed the matter to Prothom Alo.
The deceased were identified as Rubel Mia, 20, and Riti Akter, 8.
The injured were taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
"Police have impounded the vehicles involved," OC Aminul said.
In Patiya, a passenger bus overturned after hitting a road divider on the Chattogram–Cox's Bazar bypass around 12:30pm, Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Mostafizur Rahman of Patiya Highway Police outpost told The Business Standard.
One pedestrian named Abul Kashem, 35, was killed, while at least 20 passengers sustained injuries, four of them critically.
SI Mostafizur said the bus swerved onto the road divider while trying to save the pedestrian, causing it to overturn.
In Mirsharai, a car lost control in Wahedpur union's Hadi Fakirhat area on the Dhaka–Chattogram highway, killing its driver, Enamul Haque of Chauddagram, Cumilla, reports Prothom Alo.
Officer-in-Charge of Kumira Highway Police Station Zakir Rabbani said Enamul was driving his car from Chattogram towards Cumilla when the vehicle lost control and rammed into a roadside tree.
"He died on the spot. Police later recovered the body with assistance from the fire service," he added.
In Narail sadar, a motorcycle accident occurred around 3pm in the Dhonda Kazipara Mosque area on the Magura–Narail regional highway.
Narail Sadar Police Station OC Oli Mia confirmed the incident, adding that legal action is underway.
The crash left Rabby Molla, 20, of Raghunathpur, dead, while another passenger was critically injured.
In Chuadanga sadar, two youths riding a motorcycle lost control near Ghoramara on the Chuadanga–Kushtia highway around noon.
Suruj Ali, 19, of Islampara, died before reaching the hospital, while the rider, Hridoy Hossain, 18, sustained injuries, said Chuadanga Sadar Police Station OC Mizanur Rahman.
In Faridpur's Alfadanga, a 16-year-old boy, Jihad Sheikh, died in a motorcycle accident on the Arazi Bana road at around 1:30pm. His cousin, Roni Mia, 17, sustained injuries.
Alfadanga Police Station OC Md Hasnat said the accident was caused by slippery road conditions due to rain.
In Shibchar, Madaripur, a schoolboy, Shahadat Khalifa, 15, died after being falling from a van following a collision with a motorcycle on the expressway near the Kutubpur boundary around 3pm.
Shibchar Police Station OC Shafiqul Islam confirmed the death.
In Gopalganj, a power distribution employee was killed in a motorcycle accident this morning, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Shariful Islam, 30, son of UP member Moksed Ali Sheikh of Tupuria village in Kotalipara upazila. He worked as a switchboard attendant at the Sadarpur office of West Zone Power Distribution Company Limited in Faridpur.
The accident occurred in the Baikanthapur area along the Rajair–Kotalipara road while Shariful was returning home from his workplace in Faridpur to celebrate Eid with his family.
Sub-Inspector Sukumar Kundu of Kotalipara Police Station said police have received information about the accident, but no formal complaint has been filed so far.
According to family sources, relatives had been waiting for him to join Eid prayers when they received news of the crash. Locals rescued him and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Preliminary reports suggest the accident occurred when Shariful lost control of his motorcycle on a rain-slick road and crashed into a roadside tree.
In Khulna's Jhenaidah, a seventh-grade school student was killed in a road accident in the Nagarbathan Bazar area on the Jhenaidah–Chuadanga highway in the district this noon, reports BSS.
The deceased, identified as Abdul Gafur, 14, was the son of Faruk Hossain of Bagachhara village under Bhayana union in Harinakundu upazila.
Mrittyunjay Biswas, Officer-in-Charge of Jhenaidah Arappur Highway Police Station, said after the post-mortem examination, the body of the deceased will be handed over to his family.
According to police, after offering Eid prayers in the morning, Abdul Gafur went out with his friends. Around noon, they were travelling to Johan Dream Valley Park in the district on a locally made three-wheeler (Nasimon).
On the way, when they reached Nagarbathan Bazar in Jhenaidah Sadar, Abdul Gafur fell from the moving vehicle on the road and sustained serious injuries.
His classmates later rescued him and rushed him to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital in critical condition. He died there while undergoing treatment.
Duty doctors at Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital said he died due to lung injuries caused by falling onto the road from a moving vehicle.
