3 killed, 25 injured in Gopalganj bus-truck collision
One person dies on the spot, two others succumb to injuries in hospital.
Three people were killed and at least 25 others injured in a head-on collision between a local bus and a sand-laden truck in Gopalganj's Sadar upazila today (18 August).
The accident occurred around 2pm in the Boultoli area of the Gopalganj-Tekerhat regional highway, said police.
The Madaripur-bound Sonali Paribahan bus collided head-on with the truck before plunging into a roadside ditch, said Shafiul Alam, inspector of the Boultoli Police Investigation Centre.
One person died on the spot, while two others died after being taken to hospital, bringing the death toll to three.
The identities of the deceased could not be confirmed immediately. One of them was a woman.
Several of the injured are in critical condition, raising concerns that the death toll could rise.
Fire Service and Civil Defence personnel and police rushed to the scene and, with help from local residents, rescued victims trapped inside the damaged vehicles.
The injured were taken to Gopalganj Medical College Hospital and Gopalganj 250-bed General Hospital for treatment.
Gopalganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Aminul Islam said one person died at the scene and two others later died in hospital. At least 20 injured people are currently receiving treatment, he said.
Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
