Education Minister Dipu Moni on Sunday said that the Education Ministry enlisted the new educational institutions under the Monthly Pay Order (MPO) scheme on the basis of the quality of education they provide.

"We strictly followed the MPO policy and selected the educational institutions which fulfilled the criteria set in the policy. As such, many institutions run by Bangladesh Nationalist Party leaders got the MPO approval," she said.

The minister made these remarks while addressing a press conference at Bangladesh Bureau of Educational Information and Statistics (Banbeis).

"I have been running an educational institution but it was not enlisted under the MPO facility, as it failed to fulfilled the set criteria for that purpose," she said.

Dipu Moni claimed that the MPO enlistment process was conducted in a fair manner. All procedures in the process was done computerised system.

"We have received allegations against some educational institutions. We will definitely take action against the institutions that managed to get the MPO providing false information," she added.

Replying to a question, the minister said the ministry brought the institutions under MPO scheme with a view to ensuring quality education. If any institution fails to comply with the specified terms and conditions, they will be excluded from the scheme."

The government has brought 2,730 new educational institutions from across the country under the MPO scheme on October 23.

The new list includes 1,651 schools and colleges, 557 madrasas, and 522 technical and vocational institutions.

The last time 1,624 institutions were brought under the MPO scheme in 2010, and up till now more than 4.5 lakh teachers and employees of 26,340 educational institutions were enjoying the MPO benefits.

As per the new policy, everyone must apply for getting MPO and for this the non-MPO institutions must comply with several conditions. For an instance, a primary school in urban area must have 200 students while the number should be 150 if the school is in a satellite town. For higher secondary it is 300 in towns and 200 in sub-urban or satellite towns.
