Ten students of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) have been expelled for life for torturing a fellow student for an entire night in 2022 over alleged anti-government chatting.

The university authorities also cancelled the BSc Engineering certificates of four of them.

It has also been decided not to award certificates to two of them for three years and one for five years.

The decision was taken at a meeting of KUET's Student Discipline Committee on 27 January, KUET's Student Welfare Director Professor Mohammad Sultan Mahmud revealed today (3 February).

KUET Vice-Chancellor Professor Muhammad Machud presided over the meeting.

The students who have been expelled for life are: former KUET Chhatra League general secretary Sadman Nahian Sejan, Raihan Ahmed, Saad Ahmed, Saad, Sajedul Kabir, Adnan Rafi, Rizwan Islam Rizvi, Fayaduzzaman Fahim, Mehedi Hasan Mithu, Shafat Morshed and Fakhrul Islam.

Among them, the BSc in Engineering certificates of Raihan, Saad, Sajedul and Rafi have been cancelled.
In addition, it has been decided not to award certificates to Mostaq Ahmed for five years and to Shuvendu Das and Faria Jamil Nihal for three years, and never to award university testimonials.

Jahidur Rahman, hailing from Bhola's Tazumuddin, a second-year student of the CSE department of KUET at the time, was picked up and tortured by BCL members on 11 September 2022 over alleged anti-government chatting.

He was later shown arrested in a DSA case filed by KUET's Security Officer Sadeque Hossain Pramanik with Khanjahan Ali Police Station. Rezwan Sam (21), a resident of Borhanuddin Mushir Hat village in Bhola, was also accused in the case.

Jahidur was admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital's prison cell with injuries from the torture.

Following the ouster of the Awami League government on 5 August 2024, Jahidur appealed to the KUET vice-chancellor seeking justice for the torture.

On 17 September, the university authorities formed an investigation committee in this regard.

Prof Mohammad Sultan Mahmud said the Student Disciplinary Committee has taken various disciplinary measures based on the recommendations of the investigation committee.
