Primary school teachers have threatened to boycott the upcoming Primary School Certificate examinations if the government does not meet their demand of removing pay discrimination.
After being barred from holding a rally at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital, the protesting teachers took position at the adjacent Doyel Chattar on Dhaka University campus in the morning today.
Shamsuddin Masud, member secretary of the Bangladesh Primary Teachers' Oikya Parishad, said: "Police foiled our rally. But we will not move away from our demand."

While addressing the gathering, Anisur Rahman, convenor of the association, demanded a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resolve the issue.
Fourteen organisations of government primary school teachers have been demonstrating for long under the banner of Bangladesh Primary Teachers' Oikya Parishad, demanding an upgrade of the assistant teachers' salaries to Grade 11 and that of the headmasters to Grade 10.
The teachers also observed work abstention a few days ago.
