As news spread of Khulna University Vice-Chancellor Mahmud Hossain resigning, students gathered at the administrative building and demanded he not step down.

Hundreds of students gathered in the area this (18 August) afternoon chanting various slogans in his support.

Khulna University coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, also a student of the statistics department, Zahurul Tanveer said, "We will not accept the resignation of the vice-chancellor under any circumstances. The VC will continue to work the way he is working for the smooth running of the university. If there is any obstacle, we will deal with it unitedly."

He also said the students would resist any internal or external pressure regarding the resignation.

"If necessary, the university will be closed. We are drawing the attention of the chancellor of the university to take action in this regard," Tanveer said.

At one point, Tanveer entered the VC's room and demanded to know why he wanted to resign.

The VC later came down and appeared in front of the students.

"This is a great achievement in my teaching life. I will consider what you bring up," he said.
