CMC closes following BCL infighting

Chattogram Medical College (CMC) authorities have declared the campus closed for an indefinite time following clashes between two factions of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).

The college authorities instructed the students to leave the halls by Saturday evening after three students were injured in separate incidents on Friday night and Saturday morning.

CMC Principal Dr Shahena Akhter said, "The campus has been declared closed indefinitely to avoid any untoward incident. At the same time, a five-member committee headed by Professor Matiar Rahman of the Surgery Department has been formed to investigate the incidents."

The Officer-in-charge of Panchlaish Police Station Jahedul Kabir said additional police have been deployed on the campus after three students were injured in clashes.

Campus sources said on Friday midnight, the supporters of Deputy Minister for Education Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel launched a surprise attack on the supporters of former Chattogram City Corporation Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin, injuring two BCL leaders of the college. Both injured – Mahfuzul Haque, 23, and Naimul Islam, 20 – are supporters of Nasir Uddin.

Following the incident of the previous night, followers of Nasir Uddin found Nowfel's supporter Akib Hossain, 20, alone on Saturday morning and beat him up.

Immediately after this, the followers of Nowfel chased the followers of Nasir Uddin. Followers of the former mayor then took shelter inside the CMC principal's room. They were blocked there till 1 pm and came out after getting police protection.

Meanwhile, these clashes between two BCL factions have created a tense situation on the college campus. Additional police have been deployed on campus following the clashes to maintain security.
