BIAC organises country's first-ever online learning session on arbitration, mediation

Governments around the world have resorted to complete or partial lockdowns with the spread of Covid-19 and they are encouraging people – especially students – to stay home.

So students are now staying under home quarantine and having less academic pressure.

"This is a great time to enrich our students' knowledge," and perhaps prepare them for professional advancement, said the Bangladesh International Arbitration Centre in a press briefing.

The BIAC recently organised an online learning session on arbitration and mediation for law and business students.

Sixty-five students from different public and private universities including the Dhaka University, Chittagong University, Rajshahi University, North South University, and Brac University participated in the programme.

At the programme, the BIAC Chief Executive Muhammad A (Rumee) Ali said, "BIAC is the first and only licenced alternative dispute resolution (ADR) institution in the country which provides physical facilities for arbitration and mediation and organises professional training on it."

"This will go a long way in helping to create a pool of ADR professionals in the country."

Ali added that the BIAC introduced its arbitration rules in April 2012 and mediation rules in 2014 which had also been updated in 2019.

However, London College of Legal Studies (South) Head of Laws and also Senior Partner at Chowdhury and Ullah Dr Khaled Hamid Chowdhury, and BRAC University Academic Coordinator Mr Shahriar Sadat conducted the session.
