Titumir students pause protest following assurance to assess university conversion feasibility

Students of Government Titumir College have announced the suspension of their protest after receiving an assurance from the government that a committee will be formed to assess the feasibility of converting the college into a university.

Following a meeting with advisers at the Secretariat this evening, the students declared a seven-day pause in their movement. 

The meeting, which took place after an earlier discussion with Information Adviser Md Nahid Islam and Education Adviser's Special Assistant Professor M Aminul Islam, concluded with the assurance of the committee formation by next week.

Representatives of the student delegation expressed their satisfaction with the government's decision. 

"We are happy with the decision, and for now, we will not be engaging in any further street protests," said a student representative.

Regarding the formation of the committee, Senior Information Officer of the Ministry of Education Siraj Uddaula Khan said the government had decided to form a committee to assess the feasibility of converting Government Titumir College into a university. 

"The committee will be announced between Sunday and Thursday of the coming week, and it will assess whether the demand to transform Titumir College into a university is justified," he added.

Earlier on the day, students of the college staged a demonstration inside their campus in Mohakhali, demanding the government's approval for the college's elevation to university status. This marked the second consecutive day of their protests.

A large number of the police were seen stationed outside the college gate. 

On Monday, Titumir College students descended on the roads, blocking roads and even allegedly attacking a train, leaving many passengers injured. 

Traffic movement was disrupted throughout the area, and its impact could be felt long after the demonstrations ended.
