The initiative was formally inaugurated today (9 September) at the Bangladesh Consulate General in Toronto by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin.
According to EC officials, the inclusion of Canada means that Bangladeshi expatriates can now access NID services through 17 mission offices across 10 countries. This expansion is part of a wider effort to enable postal ballot voting for citizens abroad. The EC plans to gradually roll out NID services in 40 countries.
The inauguration ceremony, titled "Distribution of Smart National Identity Cards and Encouraging Expatriates to Vote," was attended by EC officials, members of the Bangladeshi community in Canada, and consulate staff.
Bangladeshi expatriates can now apply for voter registration by completing Form 2(a) online via the EC's website: https://services.nidw.gov.bd.
The NID service is currently available to expatriates in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Italy, Kuwait, Qatar, Malaysia, Australia, Japan, and now Canada. The foreign affairs ministry granted approval in July to begin work in the United States, Oman, South Africa, Jordan, and the Maldives. Within the United States, services are approved for offices in New York and Washington, in addition to Los Angeles.
