DU to build 'July Memorial'; foundation stone to be laid tomorrow

The Dhaka University administration has decided to construct a "July Memorial" on its campus to preserve the memory of the July Uprising.

The memorial will be built at the Mall Chattar, adjacent to the university's administrative building, with its foundation stone set to be laid tomorrow (5 August).

The announcement was made by DU Vice-Chancellor Dr ABM Obaidul Islam at a press conference held at the Professor Abdul Matin Chowdhury Virtual Classroom today (4 August).

He said, "The university is constructing the July Memorial to permanently preserve the memory of those martyred in the July Uprising. The memorial would serve as a lasting source of inspiration for future generations, embodying the values of democracy, justice, sacrifice and patriotism."

The VC also announced that the university will observe 14 July as "July Women's Day" every year in recognition of the courage, leadership and sacrifices of female students during the July Uprising. "The day has been incorporated into the university's annual calendar."

Obaidul Islam further said a dedicated "July Corner" will be established at the university's Central Library to preserve the history of the uprising as part of research and academic activities.
According to the VC, the archive will feature historical photographs and videos of the movement, memorabilia used by the martyrs and participants, key documents and research materials. It is expected to serve as a valuable resource for future researchers and students.

A central discussion programme marking the July Uprising will be held at the TSC Auditorium at 11am tomorrow. A special prayer programme will be held after the Asr prayers at the university's central mosque, Masjidul Jamia, seeking eternal peace for the souls of those martyred in the uprising. 

Family members of five martyrs of the July Uprising will also be honoured at the discussion programme.
