Dr Monzur Hossain, research director at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS), has officially joined the Planning Commission as a member of the General Economics Division (GED).
He assumed office today (8 April) following a government notification issued yesterday announcing his appointment for a two-year term.
Hossain brings with him a wealth of experience in macro-financial research, development policy analysis, and international economics. He earned his PhD. in International Economics from the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) in Tokyo, Japan, in 2007.
Over the years, Dr Hossain has led numerous professional research projects and worked extensively in evaluating development interventions and economic policy initiatives. His areas of expertise include macroeconomics, international and financial economics, SME development, ICTs and the knowledge economy, green finance, and renewable energy.
Before joining BIDS in 2008, Hossain served at Bangladesh Bank and the Asian Development Bank Institute in Tokyo. He also taught economics at several reputed public and private universities in Bangladesh.
His international consultancy portfolio includes assignments with the UNDP, ADB, UNCTAD, EU, World Bank, JICA, and the International Growth Center at the London School of Economics, among others.
Hossain has also held visiting scholar positions at the Graduate School of International Development, Nagoya University, and IDE-JETRO in Japan. He currently serves on the Executive Board of the American Committee on Asian Economic Studies and is on the editorial boards of Bangladesh Development Studies and the International Journal of SME Development.
He is an active member of several government advisory committees under various ministries and institutions.
His scholarly contributions include publications in leading academic journals such as Economic Modelling, Journal of the Japanese and International Economies, Applied Economics Letters, Journal of Asian Economics, and Asian Economic Papers.
He has authored and edited several research volumes, including the book Bangladesh's Macroeconomic Policy published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2020. His upcoming book Digital Transformation and Economic Development in Bangladesh is also set to be released by the same publisher.
Hossain has presented his work at numerous international conferences across the USA, UK, Japan, China, Singapore, India, and other countries.
