DMTCL tightens security after metro rail roof stunt by 2 people
“The boy had been travelling from Karwan Bazar to Agargaon, sitting between two trains before being removed near Secretariat. Fortunately, no one was harmed during the incident.”
Two individuals climbed onto the roof of a Dhaka metro train last night (30 November), prompting Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited to heighten security measures.
Speaking at a press conference at the Diabari Metro Rail station in Uttara today (1 December), DMTCL Managing Director Faruk Ahmed said it was fortunate that one of them who had stayed on the roof was not electrocuted. "The incident could have been much worse," he added.
The incident had raised fears of electrocution and possible sabotage, Faruk added.
He explained that security personnel immediately brought the boy down after spotting him. "The boy had been travelling from Karwan Bazar to Agargaon, sitting between two trains before being removed near Secretariat. Fortunately, no one was harmed during the incident."
As a precaution, train services were temporarily suspended yesterday while authorities checked the tracks for any other individuals. The following morning, a sweeper train was deployed to ensure the tracks were clear.
Faruk said that DMTCL has increased security measures on the metro rail.
CCTV cameras will be installed at station entry points to monitor movement and ensure passenger safety, he added.
Moreover, he confirmed that a 5.7 magnitude earthquake on 21 November did not cause any physical damage to the metro.
Only two tiles fell, similar to what might happen in homes, and no cracks were observed, he added.
