The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has taken comprehensive security measures to ensure peaceful observance of Ashura in the capital, Acting DMP Commissioner and Additional Commissioner (Traffic) Md Sarwar said today (3 July).

While inspecting security preparations at the historic Hussaini Dalan Imambara in Old Dhaka, he told reporters that police have been deployed at key locations where Shia community members and other devotees have been participating in mourning rituals since 27 June.

Strict security arrangements have been put in place at Hussaini Dalan, Boro Katara, Mohammadpur Bihari Camp, the Shia Mosque, Bibika Rauza, Mirpur Pallabi Bihari Camp and other important venues, he said.

All major imambaras will be brought under CCTV surveillance and specialised DMP units will remain on standby to deal with any untoward situation, Sarwar added.

The largest Tazia procession will start at 10am on 6 July (10 Muharram) from Gate-1 of Hussaini Dalan.

The procession will pass through Bakshibazar Lane, Lalbagh intersection, Shaheed Minar Road, Etimkhana crossing, Azimpur intersection, Nilkhet intersection, Mirpur Road, Dhaka College, Science Laboratory, Dhanmondi Residential Area, BGB Gate 4, and end at Dhanmondi Lake Karbala.

The DMP has urged commuters to use alternative routes to avoid traffic congestion during the march.

Additional Police Commissioner (Crime and Operations) SN Md Nazrul Islam called upon all to cooperate with law enforcement personnel and follow their instructions for smooth observance of the programmes.
