Dhaka-13 returning officer serves show-cause notice to Mamunul Haque for distributing leaflets
The returning officer of Dhaka-13 constituency has issued a show-cause notice to Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis candidate Maulana Md Mamunul Haque for allegedly distributing leaflets and violating the electoral code of conduct ahead of the national election.
The notice instructs Mamunul to submit a written explanation within three days regarding campaigning three weeks before polling day, in breach of the code for political parties and candidates.
According to the notice, he and his followers distributed leaflets to the public in front of the Election Commission building around 5:00pm on Tuesday, an incident reported by media reports.
Signed by Returning Officer Md Yunus Ali, the notice states that election symbols will be allocated to candidates on 21 January, after which campaigning is permitted.
Mamunul Haque has been asked to appear in person or through a representative at the returning officer's office and submit a written reply by 17 January.
The notice also warns that violations of the electoral code of conduct may result in imprisonment or fines.
